The Harry Potter books have achieved massive success in just a few short years, but what are they about?
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's (Sorcerer's) Stone:
Harry Potter is one of the most famous wizards of all time. How could he not be? When he was just a baby Harry defeated Lord Voldemort, one of the most evil dark wizards of all time. After killing Harry's parents Voldemort cast a curse to kill Harry, but it rebounded on Voldemort, ending his reign of terror and murder. The only thing is, Harry doesn't know this!
Harry has lived with his horrible Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon Dursley and their dreadful son Dudley for nearly 10 years. Life with the Dursley's is tough. Harry lives in the cupboard under the stairs and has no bedroom, Dudley is nothing but a bully and Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon treat Harry like a slave, even when they continually spoil their fat, greedy, son
Things are about to change. Harry's eleventh birthday is approaching and he will be old enough to attend the finest magic school in the world, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry Potter will find friendship, magic and a whole new life, but how will he cope in a world where everyone knows his name, but not everybody is glad he survived the curse that was meant to kill him?
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets:
Harry Potter once attended the finest magic school in the world. Harry Potter once had two best friends. Why had Harry not heard from them? Had they forgotten him? Did it really happen? Had it been a dream?
Harry soon realises it was not a dream as a house-elf named Dobby, who has been stopping letters reaching Harry, comes to warn him not to return to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. But Harry must go back; Hogwarts is his true home
Harry does return to Hogwarts and soon discovers a monster, released from the Chamber of Secrets, is stalking the grounds and petrifying cats, students and ghosts alike. Who is opening the Chamber of Secrets? Who is controlling the monster? Who can save Hogwarts?
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban:
Nobody has ever escaped from Azkaban, the dreaded Wizard prison, until now. Sirius Black is insane, on the run and heading to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
Black was imprisoned for the murder of 13 people, both magical and Muggles. The fall of Lord Voldemort was also the fall of Black, his follower. Wizards, Witches and even Muggles are on the look out for Black and Dementors are guarding Hogwarts. These tall, cloaked creatures, whose skin looks decayed, suck happiness from people, forcing them to relive unhappy memories. This often leaves the Azkaban prisoners they guard insane and wishing they were dead
How will Harry cope with the Dementors? After all, he has experienced things that would terrify others, including coming face to face with Lord Voldemort. Even if he survives his encounters with the Dementors what will happen when Black reaches Hogwarts?
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire:
Quidditch is cancelled! Hogwarts without Quidditch! It's true, this year there will be no Quidditch. Instead Hogwarts will be hosting the Triwizard Tournament. The tournament, cancelled over a century ago, is being resurrected to promote links between the three largest Magic Schools in the world – Hogwarts, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang
A champion will represent each school. Each champion will be at least seventeen and will be selected from students entering their names in the Triwizard cup. However, on the night of the selection of the champions the first of a number of unexpected events takes place. A fourth champion, the second from Hogwarts, is selected by the cup. This champion must now compete in the tournament, even though he is younger and has less magic experience than the others. The fourth champion is Harry Potter!
